Technicians working on a sliding glass door panel

Sliding Glass Door Glass Replacement (Glass Only)

A cracked or foggy pane doesn’t mean you need a new sliding door. We remove the panel, replace the glass unit in the existing frame, reseal it and rehang the door. That covers tempered, insulated (double-pane) and impact sliding door glass, and it’s the most common glass job we do. If the frame, rollers or track are also worn, we’ll tell you while we’re there, and we can fix them in the same visit. If the door is past saving, we can quote a complete new sliding door system instead.

Window Glass Replacement

Broken or fogged window glass can usually be replaced without taking out the window. We measure the opening, order the glass to size and install it with new glazing or beading where needed. Where we offer new installations, we can also quote a full replacement with a new impact window if that’s the better long-term fix.

Shattered tempered glass in a sliding glass door panel

Broken, Cracked or Shattered Glass

A cracked pane gets worse with heat, wind and every slam of the door. Tempered glass that breaks shatters into small pieces; annealed (plate) glass breaks into sharp shards. We’ll help you make the opening safe, measure for replacement and order the right glass.

Insulated glass unit being removed from an arched picture window

Foggy Glass and Failed Double-Pane Seals

Fog or haze between the panes means the seal on an insulated glass unit has failed. You can’t clean it from either side, and the window or door loses most of its insulating value. We replace just the sealed glass unit in the existing frame. No new frame and no permit needed for a glass-only swap.

Cracked impact glass still held in a sliding glass door frame

Impact Glass Replacement

Impact doors and windows use laminated glass that cracks but stays in the frame. In most cases we can replace just the impact glass in the existing frame. If the frame is damaged, or the product can’t be reglazed, we can quote a new impact door or window in the areas where we offer installation.

Broken plate glass window panes with sharp shards

Tempered vs Plate Glass: What's Safer?

Plate (annealed) glass can be cheaper for small pieces. Above a certain size, and in doors or near the floor, we recommend tempered glass because it breaks into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards. Under the Florida Building Code, glass in a designated “hazardous location”, such as a door or a pane next to a door, has to be replaced with tempered safety glass. We’ll tell you if yours falls under that rule when we measure.

When is tempered glass required?

Under the Florida Building Code, safety glass such as tempered is required in "hazardous locations", including:

  • Doors: any glass in swinging, sliding or bifold doors.
  • Next to doors: glass within 24 inches of either side of a door, with its bottom edge less than 60 inches above the floor.
  • Near the floor: panes larger than 9 sq ft with the bottom edge 18 inches or less from the floor and the top edge more than 36 inches up.
  • Bathrooms and wet areas: glass by tubs, showers, spas and hot tubs with its bottom edge less than 60 inches above the standing surface.
  • Stairs and landings: glass next to stairways, landings and ramps.

Glass outside these areas doesn't automatically have to be upgraded. The exception is Florida's 25% rule: if more than 25% of your home's windows and exterior glass doors are replaced within 12 months, the replaced openings must meet current code, which can mean impact or wind-load rated products. We'll check which rules apply when we measure. This is a general guide, not a code ruling for your home.

Sliding patio door with clear glass panels

Patio, French and Storm Door Glass

We replace glass in patio doors, storm doors and many French doors. Some French doors are built so the glass can’t be removed cleanly and replacement beading is no longer made. In those cases we’ll tell you up front rather than do a replacement we can’t finish properly.

How Much Does Glass Replacement Cost?

Glass pricing depends on the size, the type of glass and the door or window it goes in, so we quote every job after measuring.

  • A small tempered door lite usually runs a few hundred dollars for the glass.
  • Insulated (double-pane), impact and specialty glass cost considerably more.
  • Plate glass can be cheaper for small pieces, but we recommend tempered for larger panes.
  • Replacing just the glass is almost always cheaper and faster than a new door or window.

Window & Door Glass Replacement FAQ

Can you replace just the glass in my sliding door?

Yes. In most cases we replace only the glass unit in the existing frame. It’s quicker than a new door, costs less and usually needs no permit.

It depends on size and glass type. A small tempered door lite usually runs a few hundred dollars for the glass; insulated, impact and specialty glass cost considerably more. We give a free quote after measuring.

Custom glass takes about 2 weeks to arrive after we measure. Installation is then done in a single visit.

Yes. Fog between the panes means the seal failed, and we replace the sealed glass unit without replacing the frame.

Usually, yes. We replace the impact glass in the existing frame. If the frame is damaged or can’t be reglazed, we can quote a new impact door or window.

A glass-only replacement usually doesn’t need a permit. A full new door or window does, and we handle that as a licensed contractor (CGC 1514380).

Plate glass can be cheaper for small pieces, but for larger panes and doors we recommend tempered because it’s much safer when it breaks.

Often, yes. Some French doors are built so the glass can’t be removed cleanly and replacement beading isn’t available, and in those cases we’ll tell you up front.

If the frame, track and rollers are in good shape, replacing the glass is the better value. If the door is worn out or you want impact protection, a new door may make more sense, and we can quote both.

Yes, in hazardous locations under the Florida Building Code: doors, glass next to doors, large panes near the floor, glass by tubs and showers, and glass by stairs. Elsewhere, old plate glass doesn’t have to be upgraded unless more than 25% of your home’s windows and glass doors are replaced within 12 months. We’ll confirm what applies when we measure.
