How to Clean a Sliding Glass Door Track

Most Hard-to-Open Doors Are Just Dirty
Most “hard to open” sliding doors in Florida aren’t broken. They’re dirty. Sand, pet hair, pollen and salt build up in the track and grind down the rollers. A 20-minute cleaning every few months can add years to your door.
What you’ll need:
- A vacuum with a crevice tool
- A stiff nylon brush or old toothbrush
- A bucket of warm water with a few drops of dish soap
- Paper towels or a rag
- A butter knife or putty knife wrapped in a rag (for packed-in dirt)
- Aluminum wax spray (sold at hardware stores)
Step-by-Step: Cleaning Your Track
- Vacuum the loose dirt. Slide the door all the way to one side and vacuum the exposed track. Then slide it to the other side and do the rest. Get into the corners, where sand collects.
- Loosen the packed dirt. Use the brush, or the rag-wrapped knife, to break up anything caked into the track. Vacuum again.
- Scrub and wipe. Dip the brush in the soapy water and scrub the track. Wipe it out with paper towels until they come up clean.
- Clear the weep holes. Most sliders have small drain holes (weep holes) in the bottom track or on the outside of the frame. If they’re clogged, rainwater backs up into the track and your home. Clear them gently with a pipe cleaner or thin wire.
- Dry it and lubricate. Let the track dry completely. Spray a light coat of aluminum wax spray along the track, then slide the door back and forth 10 times to spread it. Skip silicone: it leaves a residue that collects dirt and dust.
What NOT to Use on Your Track
- WD-40, grease or oil: they feel slick at first, but they trap sand and turn into a gritty paste that wears out rollers faster.
- Harsh chemicals or steel wool: they scratch aluminum and eat away the finish, which speeds up corrosion.
- Silicone sprays: they leave a residue that collects dirt and dust. Use an aluminum wax spray instead.
How often should you clean it? Every 3 months for most homes. Monthly if you’re on the beach or near a pool, or have pets going in and out.
When Cleaning Won't Fix It
If the door is still heavy, grinding or bumping after a good cleaning, the problem is usually underneath: worn or broken rollers, a damaged track, or a door that has dropped out of adjustment. Signs it’s time for a technician:
- A grinding or scraping sound
- The door jumps or comes off the track
- You can see dents, flat spots or corrosion on the track
- You run a finger along the raised rail and it isn’t smooth and straight
- You need two hands (or a shoulder) to open it

Can I use WD-40 on my sliding door track?
We don’t recommend it. Oil-based sprays attract sand and dirt, which grinds down your rollers. Use an aluminum wax spray instead.
