Quick answer: a sliding glass door comes off track when the rollers underneath the door wear out, break or become misaligned. Damaged rollers stop the door from sitting correctly on the track, so it tilts, drags or jumps out of position.

What Causes a Door to Come Off Track?
- Worn or broken rollers: rollers carry the full weight of the door. When the bearings wear out, flatten or break, the door can’t sit properly on the track.
- Debris in the track: sand and dirt can block the rollers and push the door out of alignment, especially in homes near the beach.
- Bent or damaged track: a dented track pushes rollers out of line and can make the door jump the track. This often happens when a heavy door is forced open on worn rollers.
- Improper roller adjustment: adjustment screws set the roller height. If the rollers are uneven, the door tilts and can eventually come off track.

Is It Safe to Use an Off-Track Door?
No. Don’t force it. Operating a door that’s off track can cause more roller damage, track damage, broken glass and frame problems. In rare cases, a door with completely broken rollers can even fall out of the frame.
Can you lift it back on yourself? Sometimes a door can be lifted back onto the track, but sliding glass panels are very heavy, especially impact doors, and it takes two people. If the rollers are damaged, it will likely come off again. If you’re not sure, leave it closed and call us.
