Before the Storm: Your Checklist
Florida’s hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Your sliding doors are among the largest openings in your home.
- Test the locks. A door that doesn’t latch fully can be forced open by the wind.
- Check the rollers. A door that sits low or drags may not seal properly.
- Inspect the weatherstripping. Cracked or missing weatherstripping lets wind-driven rain in.
- Clear the weep holes. Clogged drains let water pool in the track and into your home.
- Check your shutters or panels. Make sure the tracks and hardware are all there and fit.
- Know your glass. Impact-rated doors have a label etched in the corner of the glass. If yours isn’t impact-rated, plan to cover it.
After the Storm: What to Check
- Cracks or chips in the glass
- A door that’s off track, won’t slide or won’t lock
- Water stains or wet flooring by the door
- A bent frame or track
- Torn or blown-out screens
Don’t force a damaged door. If it’s off track or the glass is cracked, forcing it can shatter the glass or bend the frame. Leave it closed, and call us.
